Repair vs. Replace Calculator in Oregon

Compare a repair quote with the cost of a new garage door or opener, using the age of the door and the 50% rule.

The 50% rule

If a repair costs more than about half the price of a replacement, replacing usually makes more sense, especially when the door or opener is near the end of its typical life. Below that, repair is usually the better value.

Typical lifespans

  • Steel garage door: 20-30 years
  • Wood garage door: 15-30 years with regular refinishing
  • Opener: 10-15 years
  • Standard springs: about 10,000 cycles, roughly 7-10 years

When to replace even if repair is cheap

  • The opener has no photo-eye sensors. Federal rules have required entrapment protection on residential openers made since 1993.
  • Panels are rusted through, rotted or the model is discontinued so sections can't be matched.
  • You want insulation, quieter operation or battery backup.

Springs are the exception: a broken spring is always replaced, and replacing springs is a normal repair, not a reason to replace the door. See garage door replacement and opener installation.
